Salvation by Langton Hughes
Summary
Langton Hughes a Harlem Renaissance writer, gives me a glimpse of his eye opening experience. "Salvation" an essay by Mr. Hughes about going on thirteen ceremony in church. Hughes Grandmother Aunt Reed told him about how this was going to be his special day, the day when he would be saved, the day when Jesus will come into his life. The pastor reached to all the kids where young Hughes sat. "Wont you came? Won't you come to Jesus? Young lamp, won't you come?". Some of the little girls got up and ran to be saved, but most of the children hold their ground. The congregation started to surrounding the children to pray for them. Finally most of the kids got up the were saved except Hughes and Westley a rounder's son. Westley had no longer wished to sit in the hot church surrounded by sisters and deacons and go up and was saved. Only Hughes was left in the bench, He still believed that Jesus would come any time now. The pressure started to build up, it was getting late and Hughes did not wanted to be the one who did not seen Jesus. As he got up everyone in the church started to cheering and singing for him. This was the day when Hughes realized Jesus does not exist. Hughes cried the whole night. His Grandmother thought it was just a holy ghost entering his body, but truthfully it was Hughes feel of regret of lying to everyone in the church.
